How about doing your laundry for under $5/month (for a large family!) and avoiding all those nasty chemicals? Make your own laundry soap! We've been doing this for years and even use it on our cloth diapers! You will need:
1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 1/2 Cups Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda*
½ Cup Borax
Grate soap or break into pieces and process in a food processor until powdered. Mix all ingredients. For light load, use 1 Tablespoon. For heavy or heavily soiled load, use 2 Tablespoons. Yields: 3 Cups detergent. (Approx. 30-40 loads)
*Arm & Hammer "Super Washing Soda"--Not baking soda--available in the laundry aisle of most grocery chains but not Walmart and Target. The Fels-Naptha soap bar is available in the same aisle of grocery stores. Borax can be found almost anywhere, including Walmart and Target.
Note: This soap will not make lots of soapy suds like regular laundry detergent. That is because it does not contain sodium laurel/laureth sulfates. It will also not make your clothes smell "fresh" because there isn't all that chemical fragrance. Those reasons, aside from the cost, are EXACTLY why we use this!!

This looks great--do you know if it'd be ok for cloth diapers? Thanks:)(Really been enjoying looking around btw:))
I actually do use it for cloth diapers and have for over a year. But I have heard many people say that it shouldn't be used for them. I use prefolds and covers like Thirsties, Bummi's, and gDiaper covers. If I used AIO's or pocket diapers, I might use something else, but since it's just prefolds, I do. It seems to work great and I haven't had to strip them or anything:) Thanks for checking out my page!
