Must-Have Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Books

Admittedly, I've gone post-crazy over on my Facebook page, giving links to articles with so much in-depth information on all things related to pregnancy and childbirth.  If you'd rather sit down with a book instead of read the information in these links, then this is for you!  I have done some research and taken from my own experiences to compile a small but powerful list of essential books for pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.  Any one of these resources will phenomenally change your knowledge on these subjects. If you know someone who is pregnant, be sure to send them a link to this post!

(And if you remember from my previous post, I post links to these resources from Amazon where a small portion of your purchase through these links goes towards homeschool book purchases for our family.  I would also recommend calling your local Half Price Books store and seeing if they have any of the following books available.)

SUPERNATURAL CHILDBIRTH: Experiencing the Promises of God Concerning Conception and Delivery
Supernatural Childbirth

This book is highly recommended for anyone who is pregnant or trying to conceive.  It helps get rid of any fears pregnancy and/or labor may bring and also includes inspiring testimonies from other women using these principles.  The advice found in this book for a pain-free childbirth has been referred to as “God’s Epidural”.

PUSHED; The Painful Truth About Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care
Pushed: The Painful Truth About Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care“We know that if we take our otherwise healthy patient in LDRP, release her cuffs and bands, unplug the probes and sensors, and turn of the Pitocin and morphine, 9 times out of 10 her body will birth a baby with minimal interference or injury. . .”

This provocative, highly readable expose raises questions of great consequence for anyone planning to have a baby in U.S., as well as those interested or involved in women's health care.  It includes stunning quotes from doctors admitting the problems with conventional medical practices for childbirth, as well as discussion about Europe's efforts to bring back homebirth.

INA MAY'S GUIDE TO CHILDBIRTH
Ina May's Guide to Childbirth
Gaskin offers encouragement and practical advice in her upbeat and informative book on natural childbirth.  After studying the Mayan method of childbirth, she has used her research to help thousands of women birth babies naturally.  The second part of this book helps give women the information they need to avoid standard unnecessary medical interventions and to learn how to trust their bodies instead.

HEARTS AND HANDS: A Midwife's Guide to Pregnancy and Birth
Heart and Hands: A Midwife's Guide to Pregnancy and Birth
This book is often called the “textbook” for student midwives but is a great read for parents-to-be.  Reviewers recommend purchasing it rather than getting it from the library as you will be referring to things in it over and over.  The 328 pages of this book include pictures, diagrams, and lots more helpful information to help a woman know what’s going on with her own body!

HOMEBIRTH IN THE HOSPITAL: Integrating Natural Childbirth with Modern Medicine

Homebirth in the Hospital: Integrating Natural Childbirth with Modern MedicineI shared the link for this book on my Facebook page because it is a great “middle-ground” for those low-risk mommas who are unsure of leaving the hospital for delivery.  This book helps give moms principles to obtain a delivery that is natural and similar to a homebirth but in a hospital.  At only 176 pages, this is a great quick-read for those who want to empower themselves with knowledge before heading to the hospital.

BREASTFEEDING MADE SIMPLE: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers
Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers
Actress Jenna Elfman says this book helped answer all her questions about breastfeeding and highly recommends it to anyone who is pregnant and wondering if they should breastfeed their baby or not.  If you aren't sure whether you want to breastfeed or not, then this book is definitely for you!  It shows how simple it can be to provide your baby with the best food ever given to babies and answers the most common questions mothers can have.

So there ya go!  I hope these resources are a valuable component to your next pregnancy, childbirth, and/or breastfeeding journey.  Praise the Lord for His wonderful creation of our bodies and this amazing miracle we get to take part in with each and every pregnancy!
