Imagine a beautiful, fortified city atop a mountain. Surrounding the city are 2-story walls made of brick 3 feet thick. Lush, green foliage and wildflowers contrast the harshness of the brick walls, giving insight into the comfort and peacefulness of the city inside.
Millions of people call this fortified city their home. They take comfort in the protective walls and intimidating towers that can be seen for miles. This city's residents know they are protected and safe.
But are they? Little do they know, a silent enemy lurks beyond the walls at the bottom of the mountain. Without ever stepping foot on the mountain, this enemy slowly poisons every inhabitant of this fortified city. He has poisoned the food supply that is brought into the city and little by little, its citizens succumb to weakness, fatigue, and disease.
Before long, the enemy has disabled every person in this beautiful city. He has caused them to be too weak to fight for their kingdom in the heat of a battle. When the time comes, the enemy knows he will win the battle with far less soldiers than this fortified city.
I'm sure some of my readers can see where I'm going. Our battle with food and disease goes far beyond the physical nature of things. It goes far beyond a supposed worry or fear of what food can do to us. It is about the battle Satan has waged against God's people--pure and simple.
Revelations 12:17 testifies to this:
Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.1 Peter 5:8 seconds that:
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.Satan's biggest victory is getting people to doubt his existence. But for those who know he exists, this enemy's second biggest victory involves blinding God's people to this slow poisoning he is doing to our bodies, minds, and spirits through food.
We cannot be of sober mind when processed and refined foods wear down our bodies and destroy brain cells. We become spiritually devoured as a result of the foods we physical devour.
"It's just food," many people might think. Go back to Genesis with me if you will, and see what caused the fall of all mankind.
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. (Genesis 3:6)
Yep--Food caused the first sin and subsequent degradation of the whole earth.
My work as a nutritional counselor and wellness educator is my ministry. It is not an obsession with natural foods. It is not an effort to control me or my family from ever getting any diseases or illnesses. Only God can control that. I am simply calling my brothers and sisters in Christ to take a stand with me against this silent enemy. Let us wage war with strong bodies and spirits. Let us be of sober mind and self-control. Let us have the energy and fuel to share Jesus Christ with the world, without being weighed down by self-induced illness and disease! May the Spirit of God bless each and every reader with the passion to fight for the promise of heaven and hope of Christ!
